Portsmouth have signed the former Chelsea defender Tal Ben Haim from Manchester City and are also interested in re-signing Benjani Mwaruwari from Eastlands but face competition from Blackburn Rovers and Fulham for the striker.

Ben Haim's arrival comes after Sylvain Distin left Fratton Park for Everton. The Israel international has been out of favour at City and last season spent time on loan at Sunderland. Portsmouth also retain an interest in the Watford defender Mike Williamson.

Paul Hart's squad is also set to be bolstered by the midfielder Hassan Yebda, after Benfica said they had agreed to loan the Frenchman to Fratton Park.

There could be further arrivals, with the former Chelsea and Liverpool midfielder Boudewijn Zenden in talks with Portsmouth and Blackburn over a free transfer.
